Spain’s Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE) has awarded 183.18 million euros to two renewable hydrogen projects led by Repsol in A Coruña and Puertollano. The funding, backed by Next Generation EU resources through the European Hydrogen Bank’s «Auctions as a Service» mechanism, reinforces the role of renewable hydrogen as a key lever to decarbonize Spain’s refining industry.

The A Coruña project will receive up to 133 million euros and is part of the A Coruña Hydrogen Valley, one of the leading commitments to the energy transition in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. The initiative aims to produce renewable hydrogen to progressively replace the fossil based hydrogen currently used in refining processes, significantly reducing the associated emissions.

In Puertollano, the P-HYNET project will feature a 12.27 MW electrolyzer and 49.79 million euros in support, with a reference price of 2.25 euros per kilogram. The plant will supply renewable hydrogen to the local industrial complex and positions Castilla-La Mancha as one of the emerging hubs for this technology.

Both projects are part of the European strategy to accelerate renewable hydrogen production at industrial scale. The «Auctions as a Service» mechanism allows member states to channel national funds through the European Hydrogen Bank’s common platform, providing revenue predictability for developers and narrowing the cost gap with fossil hydrogen. For the refining sector, integrating renewable hydrogen is a decisive step toward cleaner fuels and toward meeting decarbonization targets.
